This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured numerous filler arcs. Starting in the new year, once the current storyline wraps up, the anime will take a three-month break until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.
Updated Production Plan
Going forward, One Piece will release two seasons every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio states this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — incorporating more content, tempo, and timing of the source material.” However, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means additional One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere in the interim.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The series anime previously took a half-year break that started in October 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and let the comic to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to deliver fans with numerous action sequences, high-quality animation, and less filler than previously.
Embracing Seasonal Format
Although a few summary installments appeared during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the news, this may lead to one episode of the anime adapting one chapter, with others alternatively covering one and a half chapters or more to compensate for time.
It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of production, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two maximum coming out each annually, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
